Moorings on the River Yealm for Brixton residents

All residents of Brixton are entitled, along with residents of Wembury, Yealmpton, Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo to apply for a mooring on the River Yealm. There is a high demand for these moorings, so if you wish to join the waiting list, it could be some time before you are offered a mooring by the Yealm Harbour Authority.
There are five mooring categories and generally speaking the shallower smaller boat moorings waiting list is much shorter. If you are interested in applying to join the moorings waiting list, have a look at the website https://www.yealmharbourauthority.co.uk/ where there are details about how to apply including charges etc. There is a charge to join the waiting list. I am currently the Brixton Parish Council appointed representative on the Harbour Authority, please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Brixton Composters - Reopening at Catson Green

We are pleased and relieved to announce that the community site at Catson Green will re-open for business on Saturday 5th December. Thereafter it will be open 5 days a week and on Saturday mornings, as before.

The upgrade has been a major exercise and taken much longer than we originally thought, but we hope you’ll agree that it has been worthwhile. We now have an all-weather facility we can use on a year-round basis, and it gives us the scope to recycle other waste streams in future.

Although we were supported by Yealm Community Energy with a grant towards the cost of the upgrade, it has been a major expense for us and our Green Fund has been severely depleted. You can help us to rebuild the Fund simply by bringing green waste which, magically, we will turn into money. So ‘don’t bin it, bring it’!

If you have any comments or queries by all means email me on apowell951@aol.com or call on 07778 278538.

In Spring 2021, South Hams District Council will be introducing an all new ‘Super Recycler’ service, so that every household can recycle more.

The planned changes will align the recycling service with other Devon districts and add glass and a wider range of plastics to the list of items collected at the kerbside.

In preparation for the new service, a full review of the collection rounds has taken place and new routes will come in to effect from 5 October 2020. This will mean changes to collection days for around 2/3rds of households.

Police commissioners seek public views on road safety

Police and Crime Commissioners are urging people to take 60 seconds to influence Government policy on roads policing.
Alison Hernandez, the national PCC lead on road safety, has asked the other 41 commissioners in England and Wales to support and promote a survey so results can be fed into a Department for Transport Call for Evidence.
She is hoping for a significant response to what is believed to be the first national poll co-ordinated by PCCs.
“It is clear that the number of people killed and seriously injured (KSIs) on our roads is unacceptable and needs drastically reducing,” she said.
“PCCs have a strong voice in local communities and are eager to understand the public’s views around road safety and policing our roads.
“This survey will allow PCCs to advocate the strength of public feeling to make our roads safer and, I hope, give the Government the evidence it needs to act.”
Commissioner Hernandez, the commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, also believes that more enforcement on the roads could have a knock-on effect on other criminality.
“Roads policing officers play an essential role too in tackling criminality on our roads including drug and weapons smuggling, people trafficking, county lines and other organised criminality,” she said.
“This week in Devon and Cornwall roads police officers discovered a drugs haul after stopping a driver who was speeding at 120mph and we saw on the Call the Cops series how they had prevented people smugglers trading in human misery by apprehending them on the M5.”
The poll, which can be found below, is open until 30 September 2020.

Can you help reduce speeding traffic through Brixton Village?

Community Speed Watch in Brixton is looking for more volunteers to help reduce speeding traffic through Brixton Village. Community Speedwatch was created by Devon & Cornwall Police to encourage residents of local towns and villages to volunteer to carry out main road vehicle speed checks. Brixton Community Speed Watch was set up in 2019. Five volunteers were trained to operate Speedwatch in Brixton village. During lockdown Speedwatch was suspended.
Officially Speedwatch could have restarted from 20th July 2020 but the original team of 5 local volunteers has reduced to 2. Now a further 4 volunteers are needed for Brixton to have two teams on a rotation basis which would give regular coverage without taking up too much volunteer time. Full training, high viz jackets and support is provided. The sites where the Speedwatch teams are located are all risk assessed by the Police. To find out more about volunteering for Speedwatch in Brixton please contact clerk@brixtoparishcouncil.org.uk.

Please BE VIGILANT

On Tuesday 21st July 2020 a resident of Brixton in her eighties who lives alone received a visit from two men offering to power wash her patio. She accepted their offer. On completion, the men demanded £500 in cash. The lady stated she did not have that amount of cash in the house. They then 'sent' her to the bank to withdraw the cash. On her return and handing over the £500, the men reportedly stated that whilst she was away, they had carried out further repairs to some paving and demanded another £1,500.It is reported that she subsequently handed over a cheque for the £1,500 and the men departed. The Police subsequently became involved and the cheque stopped. Please be aware that unscrupulous people are around trying to con people … don’t use any casual work men, don’t be subjected to any pressure they may put on you, look out for your neighbours at all times… look out for any unusual vehicles i.e. white vans and take their registration number. Be vigilant at all times.

The Brixton Volunteer Prescription Pickup ends on 9th July 2020

In March this year Brixton Parish Council, as part of its Community Emergency Plan, set up a volunteer prescription pickup service in response to the COVID-19 lockdown. This service benefitted 70 residents in our community and all have said how much they have appreciated this.

It’s time to wind down this support that was needed during lockdown. Our Volunteers and Coordinator have been amazing, but they now need to get back to work and get their lives back too.

The last Volunteer pick up will be Thursday 9th July, with no volunteer prescription pick up after that, including for emergencies. Attached are a letter from us and explanatory email from Yealm Medical which we delivered to all on the Prescription pick up list on Saturday. There are various support options; no need for anyone to feel abandoned, or stuck.

A really strong community spirit has developed over the past three months and we don’t want to lose that. There are lots of ways we can keep it going, so please keep suggestions coming. We are far from through COVID-19, but now are better able to understand and manage the risk. Meantime, sincere thanks to all our Volunteers and Prescriptions Coordinator from all of us.
