Become a Voice on the River Yealm Harbour Authority – Represent Your Community!Brixton Parish Council is looking for someone to represent them on the River Yealm Harbour Authority — and you don’t need to be a councillor or even live in the parish to apply! If you're passionate about local issues and ready to make a difference, this is your chance. The role involves attending around 10 meetings a year, held every third Tuesday at 6pm at the Harbour Office (with breaks in August and December). Can’t always make it in person? Zoom attendance is often possible. You’ll be involved in important discussions, especially during the winter months, and may also join occasional sub-committees focused on budgets and staffing. No specific qualifications are needed — just a willingness to contribute and ideally some experience or interest in areas such as finance, law, health & safety, the environment, small business, or marine matters. Welcome to the official website for Brixton Devon
Brixton Parish offers the opportunity to embrace village and rural life: a sense of community, tranquillity, a safe environment with public green spaces and beautiful landscapes benefitting from a wide range of local facilities. Our community benefits from both the South Devon National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the close proximity to the historic port city of Plymouth. The parish of Brixton has a long history which can be traced back to the Domesday Book. The local economy was traditionally based on farming, together with other rural and commercial activities around the river Yealm. The village of Brixton visibly reflects its history with its 14th Century Church and Priests’ Cottages, alongside the historic Feoffee Trust owned cottages and park. Modern housing, such as Carrollsland (to the south west) and Canes Orchard in Brixton Village, has shaped the current character of the parish and the community, as demand for homes has grown over the years. Construction started of the new town of Sherford in 2016, much of which is currently within the Brixton Parish boundary.
